History of Malden and District Motor Club
This archive for Malden and District Motor Club was created in 2022 so as to bring together as much of the history of the club as possible. Over many years noted drivers and supporters were active in most aspects of motor sports - trials, racing, rallies, autotests as well as more social activities. The club was a noted part of the local communtiy in north-west Surrey.
As the club grew so the nature of the events they organised became more varied, and members started to step up the sporting ladder and by the 1930s several members were active in motor sport at national and international level. This continued after the club’s activities ceased during World War II.
Rallying became the focus of most of the club’s motor sport in the later years from local evening rallies around the Surrey Hills to some members tackling regional, national and even international rallies.
Driving tests were also popular either on firm ground such as ashphalt or concrete, with similar events in fields which the club identified as motorpoints.
Social activities were also important with natter and noggins, talks, quizzes, gymkhanas, dinner and dances, treasure hunts etc.
Over the years the club met at various pubs around the area including:
1937-38 The George and Dragon, Kingston Hill
1939 The Fox and Hounds, Portsmouth Road, Surbiton
1946 The Plough, Worcester Park
1946-50 The Cricketers, Fairfield South, Kingston
1951 The Albany Hotel, Norbiton
1952 The Cricketers, Fairfield South, Kingston
1953-56 The Liverpool Arms, London Road, Kingston
1957 The Outrigger, Riverside, Kingston
At some stage the club also met at the Railway Hotel, Norbiton. The Outrigger remained the club venue until the last years of the club.
